Penguin footprints on the pavements, spectacular themed table centres courtesy of Roseparks, a flock of 60 hand-made metal flamingos created especially by the Zoo’s blacksmith, the late John ‘JR’ Ramsay and face-painted service staff set the scene for the 600 guests to experience something unique.

Guests enjoyed a champagne reception before visiting Animal Kingdom accompanied by live African drum music.

Expertly compèred by Scottish television’s Angus Purden, the evening included a showcase of mammals, reptiles and birds from Edinburgh Zoo accompanied by their Keepers, trapeze mermaids, a specially choreographed ‘Happy Feet’ tap-dance routine from a cast of 50 dancing ‘penguins’ preceded animal songs from The MGA Academy of Performing Arts choir all of which provided a special birthday message to the Zoo and of course pandas ‘Sweetie’ Tian Tian and ‘Sunshine’ Yang Guang made a fun appearance too!

The keynote address was delivered by HRH The Princess Royal.
